Red Bull

I’d been exploring the breeding aggregation of the Giant Australian Cuttlefish for 10 minutes too long, in freezing
stormy waters at Stony Point near Whyalla. It was time to scramble to the rocky shore and climb out onto the baked red
dirt. As I dove down one more time, I came face-to-face with a huge and powerful bull. It was the only cuttle I saw that
reacted to me that day- it looked me dead in the eyes and flared a deep, dark, hot red.
Its smooth mantle changed texture, suddenly encrusted in long spikes spouting out like angry taurine horns.
I left the water, reminded of my place as a visiting guest to the Red Bull’s waters of origin.
