Vampire Squid (Mouth)

Vampire Squid
Vampyroteuthis infernalis
Up to 15 cm
Tentacle Trapper
Despite its intimidating spines that look like a bloodsucker's teeth, this is the only known living cephalopod that does not hunt live animals for food. Instead they float and wait for contact with food- swimming around prey until it falls into its 'mouth' where it creates a ball of food that it wiggles into its beak. Rather than inking, its tentacles emit a cloud of bioluminescent sticky mucous that glows for 10 minutes while it escapes a predator.
