The viperfish hangs motionless in the jet black water. It dances its glowing photophore around its dark
body. It senses movement. In the darkness above, there’s a darker fleck- a fish. The viperfish sighs and takes
a moment to think to itself; “here we go again...” before hinging up its skull, unslotting its oversized fangs
from sockets attached to its eyeballs, then thrusting forward at full speed to impale its poor victim. Dinner
is served. Meanwhile, a shark passes below... but does not notice the viperfish, thanks to its bioluminescent
body that blends its silhouette into what little sunlight makes it down from above.
